About Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology

Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar is the first Agricultural University established in independent India and is widely regarded as the institution that laid the foundation of modern agricultural education in the country. The university was inaugurated by India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 17 November 1960 as the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University. Later, in 1972, it was renamed in honor of Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The university was established on the American Land-Grant University Model through collaboration between the Government of India, ICAR, and several leading universities of the United States. Pantnagar University became the model for the development of agricultural universities across India and played a historic role in strengthening agricultural education, research, and extension services. GBPUAT is often called the "Harbinger of the Green Revolution in India" because of its major contribution to high-yield crop varieties, seed production, agricultural mechanization, and farmer-oriented research. The university significantly contributed to increasing India's food grain production and improving farming practices across the country. The university has one of the largest university campuses in India, spread across more than 12,000 acres. The campus includes advanced laboratories, research farms, experimental fields, veterinary facilities, libraries, hostels, technology centers, community radio services, extension centers, and modern agricultural infrastructure. GBPUAT consists of multiple constituent colleges including the College of Agriculture, College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, College of Technology, College of Fisheries, College of Agribusiness Management, College of Forestry & Hill Agriculture, and College of Home Science. The university offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Doctoral, MBA Agribusiness, Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology, Fisheries Science, Forestry, and Veterinary programs.
